SurfaceInterval Automatic Configuration

SurfaceInterval can evaluate certain dive entry parameters and make decisions about how they may apply to other settings. Under the direction of this tab's settings, it can help insure that each dive entry makes sense before it is saved in the log. For example, if you enter a dive that begins at 11:00 AM, it probably doesn't make sense to have the Night Dive checkbox checked. Although you are not prevented from saving such an entry, these settings attempt to insure that you don't do so inadvertantly.

Automatic Configuration

Enabling this checkbox allows SurfaceInterval to make decisions about various dive entry settings based on the criteria defined in this panel. Using this feature can dramatically improve the acuracy statistical reporting by eliminating potential conflicts between various log entry settings. Further information regarding statistical reporting is available here.

Night Dives are between xx P.M. and xx A.M.

Use these arrows to specify when night begins and ends. If SurfaceInterval detects that any portion of a dive occurs at "night", it will automatically select the Night Dive checkbox for you.

Use local sunrise and sunset when available.

SurfaceInterval can dynamically calculate local sunrise and sunset for you based on the date, latitude and longitude of the currently represented dive. Latitude and longitude values are obtained in one of three ways. First, you can manually enter coordinates in the Dive Site panel. Second, SurfaceInterval allows you to download coordinates directly from any NMEA compatible GPS device. Finally SurfaceInterval will draw from a small internal database of coordinates for many popular harbors, in the event that coordinates have not otherwise been entered. Select this checkbox to instruct SurfaceInterval to use that data when determining that a dive is a night dive. When you do so, SurfaceInterval will flag any dive as a night dive which occurs between sunset and sunrise for the following morning. This calculation overrides any values entered in the above controls.

Deep Dives are >= xxx

Use these arrows to specify the depth at and beyond which a dive should be considered "deep". The value defaults to 70 ft (21 meters) in accordance with PADI training guidelines. Whenever SurfaceInterval detects that the maximum depth encountered during a dive was greater than or equal to the value entered here, it will automatically select the Deep Dive checkbox for you. It will do so for downloaded, imported, or manually entered dive entries.

Safe ascent rate < xxx

This is where you specify the maximum ascent rate to be considered safe before SurfaceInterval automatically sets the Ascent Rate alarm checkbox. Once again, the default of 60 ft (18 meters) per minute is based on PADI guidelines.
