SurfaceInterval Dive Boat

This panel contains contact and other pertinent info for dive boats. SurfaceInterval is fully integrated with Apple's built-in Address Book Database. This is the same database that is used by Apple's Address Book application. Whenever a dive boat operator is added to SurfaceInterval's custom menus, SurfaceInterval will automatically import and export address information to and from the Apple Address Book. By doing so, we don't need to maintain two separate databases for dive boat operators. In addition, you can take full advantage of iSync if you want your dive boat operators' contact information to be available on multiple computers.

Boat Name and contact info
Here is where you enter address and contact info for the dive boat from which you are diving. You'll notice that the address fields will be filled in for you automatically whenever you enter a boat name that coincides with an existing Address Book entry.

Email address
SurfaceInterval will attempt to validate the entered email address for proper structure. Once it is satisfied that you have entered a potentially valid email address, the email button will be enabled. Clicking on that button, will launch your default email application with a pre-addressed message to the indicated recipient. Note that SurfaceInterval does not actually attempt to validate the adress online. It simply verifies that the entered address follows the generally accepted conventions for email addresses. Specifically, the email address must contain at least 7 characters, including an @ sign, and at least one period. In addition, the period must be followed by at least 3 characters. (ex. a@b.com)

Website address
SurfaceInterval will attempt to validate the entered website address for proper structure. Once it is satisfied that you have entered a potentially valid website address, the web button will be enabled. Clicking on that button, will launch your default browser application which will navigate to the entered address. Note that SurfaceInterval does not actually attempt to validate the address online. It simply verifies that the entered address follows the generally accepted conventions for web addresses. Specifically, the website address must contain at least 7 characters, including at least one period. In addition, the last period must be followed by at least 3 characters. (ex. a.b.com, a.com, www.a.com, http://www.a.com, etc.)

LOA, Beam, and draft
These are the dimensional characteristics of the boat, represented in feet or meters.

History
The number of dives from this boat, and the last date you dove on it are displayed. This info is based only on the entries in the currently open dive log. Offline dive logs are not evaluated for this information.

Images
You can add an image of this dive boat by clicking on the image well, or by dragging an image to the well, and releasing the mouse button. Image types supported include .tiff, .jpg, .pict, or indeed, any other image type that QuickTime knows how to display. In addition, you can use any PDF file as your image. The image that you add will be scaled to fit the image well, and SurfaceInterval will attempt to maintain the original ratio of height to width. The original image on disk is never modified in any way.

If you have Address Book synchronization turned on, SurfaceInterval will import any image associated with this dive boat from the Address Book database. It will ONLY do so if you have NOT added your own custom image within SurfaceInterval. Address Book thumbnails are of very low resolution, so any images added within SurfaceInterval will always supersede any Address Book thumbnails. You can replace any image displayed in the well at any time simply by clicking on the existing image, or dropping a different image onto it. One final note regarding Address Book synchronization; Images added within SurfaceInterval are NOT exported to the AddressBook. The down-sampling required to match the resolution of Address Book thumbnails rarely yields desirable results.

Be advised that the images displayed in SurfaceInterval are NOT cached. You can move or rename them to your heart's content. However, if you delete the original image from your disk, SurfaceInterval will no longer display it.
